Blackjack

The most popular game in a casino. The earliest version of Blackjack dates back to 18th century France, where it was known as vingt-et-un (French for 'twenty-one'). During the 19th century, the game migrated to Canada and the United States, though it didn't take off in the U.S. until the rules were changed slightly to make the odds more favourable to the player. One such rule change was the addition of a 10:1 bonus if players drew the Jack of clubs or spades together with the Ace of spades as their first two cards. Thus history was made and the game became known forever after as "Blackjack."

The object of Blackjack is to get a total value of cards as close to 21 as possible without going over and to beat the dealer's total. Numbered cards are worth their face value; picture cards are each worth 10. Aces are worth either 1 or 11, whichever is better in the circumstances. If the total value of your cards exceeds 21, you lose.

If your total is less than or equal to 21 and the dealer's total is over 21, then the dealer loses and you win. If neither your total nor the dealer's total exceeds 21, then the higher total wins. In the event of a tie, or stand off, no one wins and no one loses. You can split pairs that are not picture cards if you match the original bet. You can split aces but only have one card on each. You may also buy one card only if your two cards add up to between 9, 10 or 11. You must place your bet before you get cards dealt. You may also bet on the back of someone else's box, but have to match the raised bets if that person increases their bet.
